About the event
The Rochester Art Club will host Luis Álvarez Roure for a three-day portrait/fabric workshop in oil September 13-15, 2024. The workshop will focus on working on the portrait from life, like those of the Bravura school such as Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn. An alla-prima approach will be presented to develop the portrait for the rest of the workshop without making it look overly worked — or in other words, to keep it simple and fresh. Students will learn how to see the subject in simple forms of light, shadow, color, and form rather than getting into details too early in the process.
Luis will start by demonstrating the use of materials and the basic steps of the process. Students will then interpret the subject from life and focus on big, simple masses of light, shadow and color. As they progress on their portrait, Luis will help students and answer questions. A white-on-white theme will be explored as well as the model will wear a white robe.
Luis Alvarez Roure won the prestigious Portrait Society of America’s International Competition 2022 Draper Award for his painting pictured.
